I Ching:From understanding to practice

From understanding to practice

Ask about one actionable situation, such as submitting a proposal with incomplete information. Record present conditions and a deadline, derive questions about preparation and sequence from the selected text, then check them against facts that could also overturn the initial reading.

Worked example

For bottom-to-top values 7,8,7,8,9,8, only line five changes. Build the original polarity pattern, then reverse that line to obtain the relating hexagram. The selected focus is primary line five, rather than a sentence chosen because it seems agreeable.

Reading and judgment

Zero changes selects the primary judgment; one selects that line; two reads both with upper emphasis; three reads both judgments without ranking them. Four or five reads the unchanged positions in the relating hexagram, with lower emphasis for four. Six reads Use Nine or Use Six for Qian or Kun, otherwise the relating judgment. This is an explicit policy, not universal consensus.

Common mistakes

Read auspicious or adverse language with its conditions and context. A relating hexagram is not a guaranteed future. Recasting until a preferred answer appears weakens the record; importing Na Jia significators changes the method.
